Sleep apnea is the state where you discontinue breathing in the night for small intervals. There are three kinds of sleep apnea, including central, mixed and obstructive. Out of these, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused because of blockage of airway, generally when the throats soft issues collapses and closes while sleeping. The central sleep apnea happens when the airway does not gets blocked, however the brain stops signaling the muscles to respire. On the other hand, mixed apnea is a fusion of central and obstructive sleep apnea. With every apnea event, brain briefly arouses individual with sleep apnea to resume breathing, consequently sleep is extensively fragmented and not of good quality.

Sleep apneas symptoms

Few of the most usual symptoms that you might notice include:

Excessive daytime sleepiness that is sleeping when you usually should not like while you are having food, driving or talking.

Walking with a lethargic feeling following sleep having issues with concentrating and memory, feeling tried as well as experiencing changes in personality

Night or morning headaches

Sour taste and heartburn in mouth, especially during night

Nocturia, urinating at night

Chest pain and seating when you sleep

There are other sleep apneas symptoms that someone else might note when you sleep, including:

Apnea that may occur as less as five times in an hour (mild apnea) to above than fifty times in an hour (severe apnea), which determines the severity of sleep apnea

High snoring, although majority of the individuals suffering from sleep apnea snore, but not every individual who snore suffers from sleep apnea

Turning while sleeping and restless tossing

Gasping spells or night time choking

Sleep apnea and obesity

When it comes to finding out reasons of sleep apnea, one of the main causes noticed highly is obesity. Obesity is a leading cause of sleep apnea and one can eliminate the symptoms and breathe simply through getting weight loss surgery. Through weight loss surgery when you lose as less as ten percent of your weight, you can considerably reduce your risk of getting sleep apnea.

Getting weight loss surgery, you can successfully assist an individual suffering from sleep apnea to get rid off the disease and get a proper sleep. The best part of weight loss surgery is that it allows you to shed off excess weight in a very little span, which otherwise putting off through traditional mediums would take loads of time.

The studies have proved that people who do not get adequate amount of sleep contains higher level of cortisol within their system as compared to those who take enough sleep. High level of cortisol, can lead to put on weight, which consequently causes sleep apnea. Through weight loss surgery the level of cortisol can be decreased, and the problem of sleep apnea can be cured.

Remaining untreated, obesity and sleep apnea, collectively can have detrimental effects over your mood, weight and most importantly your social life. Also, your souse might also go through the same symptoms, since they will too have insufficient sleep because of your loud snoring and odd sleeping patterns.

Uvula it’s not worth losing sleep over! Well no it’s not but what to do about it?

I noticed the Uvula was in google hot trend and decided to put this article from www.dailyevergreen.com up for the readers of Sleep Apnea Today

Attempting to listen to an early-morning history lecture, your mind lies elsewhere while wishing you wouldnt have stayed up all night taking shots with some guy named Morgan. The consequence is surreal; the slow-motion meandering of your monotonous professor seems more lackluster than watching a silent film on Xanax.

As time slows and your limbs turn flaccid, you inadvertently slip into a coma, tenderly tumbling into your plush cushion seat. In your mind, the soft chair is no more educational furniture than a Serta mattress and your professors paraphrased causes of World War II are just the overlapping murmurs of a forgotten dimension.

Yet despite this morning-after stupor, the comfort is short-lived. As a gust of air moves up from your lungs and struggles to get past your uvula (a part of your body that sounds like a dirty word but is in fact completely proper to use in polite company. Example: I hear Rusty has a huge uvula), you begin to snore just loud enough to wake yourself from the siesta.

Wow I really hope nobody heard that, you think to yourself, Are people staring at me? Unfortunately, what you think is an innocent wheeze is in fact a nasal belch so overwhelmingly resonant that only God himself could reenact the vociferous hilarity of it all. To your dismay, the class is in fact staring at you hundreds of beady, unforgiving eyes taking just nanoseconds to swivel toward potential comic relief.

A split second of silence is followed by a sudden outburst of laughter a roaring sea of embarrassment that thrusts your pride into the annals of shame.

But they arent laughing at you because they find you foolish they are laughing in relief. While snoring is heckled at in our society, many of us secretly battle this slumber syndrome with desperation.

Yes, snoring is a serious epidemic one that affects more Americans than shark attacks and bankruptcies combined, sexually impoverishing the outlying majority of humanity unknowingly catching a few too many Zs. Yet many people refuse to admit that they snore.

The problem is that we are taught from an early age that it is not appropriate to emit any sound or scent that could possibly indicate that we are biological organisms snores, farts, body odor and burps. No, these are downright barbaric actions only appropriate in less civilized societies.

Snoring has become such a chastised characteristic that in my lifelong research of the subject (a total of six minutes), I found 4.25 million Google search results for snoring, 2.2 million results for snoring help, three Facebook groups called Snorers Anonymous, and an entire Web site dedicated to the link between snoring and the rising divorce rate.

Its an inconvenient truth, people.

But we shouldnt feel guilty about snoring. Even I, despite an unmistakable aura of verified perfection, admit to have found myself on the wrong end of this stick.

During a summer camping trip with teammates from my high school baseball team, my excessive snoring problem provoked two so-called friends to move my entire air mattress outside of the tent and into the pouring rain.

The revenge was, of course, much worse.

Nonetheless, I admit that I too produce nocturnal noises many would call for an exorcist. And though Ive been enlightened about my disorder by numerous secondhand victims, Ive never quite found a reason to be concerned and neither should you.

Though the black and blue bruises on a ribcage ravished by an angry roommate beg to differ, if youre out cold, it really isnt your problem.

Snore away, my friends, snore away.

It is not uncommon to suffer from a sleep disorder, however, many people who suffer from sleep disorders do little about it because they don’t think it is a big deal. But consistent lack of sleep can cause anxiety and depression. That is why it is important to consider trying various treatments for these conditions.

In order to find effective sleep disorder treatments there must a diagnosis of the type of disorder being presented by the patient. Some of the symptoms include feeling sleepy, irritable, or tense throughout the day, difficulty staying awake while watching television or reading, and red eyes as well as red half circles under your eyes.

Some of the symptoms of a consistent lack of sleep can be cause for concern such as falling asleep while driving and having slow reactions along with emotional outbursts. Requiring caffeine throughout the day to stay alert can also be a hint that a sleep disorder could be present and treatments should be investigated.

The person suffering from a sleep disorder may have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, as well as, have difficulty staying awake through the day. Some of the most common treatments are aimed at curing insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy.

Insomnia is typically a short-term sleep disorder that prevents adequate rest and is usually caused by stress, a poor sleep schedule or irregular bedtime, as well as a physical or emotional problem. There are natural treatments for insomnia like:

* Learning breathing and relaxation exercises

* Doing Yoga

* Exercising more throughout the day.

Your diet can also play a role in treating your sleep disorder. Try to avoid:

* caffeine

* alcohol

* sugar

Medical Intervention May Be Needed As Treatment For Some Sleep Disorders

Some sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, may require medical treatment. Sleep apnea is usually accompanied by heavy and loud snoring and causes the person to wake up possibly hundreds of times during the night without remembering being awake. A partially blocked airway is causing the sleep loss and these sleep disorder treatments include the use of devices to help force air into the mouth while sleeping or a mechanical dental device to help keep the mouth in the right position to breath throughout the night.

Restless Leg Syndrome is a relatively newly accepted problem, accompanied by symptoms of involuntary leg and feet moving while relaxing and trying to sleep. A similar sleep disorder, periodic limb movement disorder may involve different body limbs during sleep, causing interrupted rest. Treatments for these sleep disorders may include medication, lifestyle changes and alternative remedies listed above.

Narcolepsy is indicated by uncontrolled sleep periods during the day as well as short-term loss of muscle control during emotional times. Some of the sleep disorder treatments for narcolepsy include counseling, medication and behavioral treatments. For any disorder with long-term potential health effects, medical advice should be sought.

If you suffer from a sleep disorder, rest assured because there are treatments available that can help you get the sleep you need. Please don’t wait to help yourself. Getting the proper amount of sleep is vital to your health and well-being.

Sleep apnea is one of the commonest of all sleep disorders and affects approximately eighteen million people in the United States. A sleep disorder which is characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep, it is also unquestionably the most dangerous of sleep disorders because it starves the brain of essential oxygen and can sometimes prove to be fatal.

There are two completely different forms of sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is in essence a neurological condition in which the breathing is interrupted as a result of signals sent from the brain. Obstructive sleep apnea by contrast is in essence a mechanical problem in which the windpipe is blocked either by excessive tissue or by the abnormal collapse or relaxation of the muscles around the windpipe. In either case however the results are essentially identical with regular interruptions to normal breathing that deprive the brain of oxygen and put the sufferer at greater risk from things like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

Sadly, diagnosing sleep apnea is not always easy because snoring, which is a common symptom and often results in sleep apnea being known as the snoring disease, is also present as a symptom of various other conditions. Snoring is usually present in cases of sleep apnea because the brain responds to a drop in oxygen by awakening the sufferer sufficiently to restart the breathing process and this usually produces snoring.

This repeated awakening through the night also causes a very poor quality of sleep and it is not at all uncommon for sleep apnea sufferers to get up in the morning feeling even more tired than when they went to bed. This also results in a feeling of exhaustion during the day and an overpowering desire to sleep.

However, tiredness resulting from a poor quality of sleep is just one part of the picture and a range of other symptoms will also generally be present including morning headaches, poor memory and a problem in concentrating.

Without treatment the growing exhaustion from sleep apnea can produce severe psychological difficulties beginning with touchiness and progressing to depression with noticeable changes in both mood and behavior.

Both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea can be treated and, providing the problem is caught at an early stage, treatment is often reasonably easy. For example, a mild case of obstructive sleep apnea resulting from nasal congestion can normally be treated with little more than a course of decongestants. In the same way, a lot of cases of sleep apnea that are not too severe can be treated with a mask that is worn during sleep and that delivers a constant pressure of air to keep the airway open. Finally, in the most severe cases of sleep apnea surgery might be required and can be extremely effective, though it can also lead to various complications and has to be approached with care.

Probably the most important thing to remember when treating sleep apnea is that as it carries with it the potentially fatal risk of respiratory failure sufferers ought not to be tempted to use sleeping pills or to take other forms of sleep enhancers without the approval of a doctor.

Natural sleep remedies unquestionably provide an effective complement to prescribed medication and herbal remedies which are intended to improve both the quality and duration of sleep may well help in the management of the excessive daytime sleepiness normally brought on by sleep apnea. Similarly, things like aromatherapy, chromatherapy and meditation and guided relaxation can help to reduce the anxiety and insomnia that come with sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a common breathing condition that can range from mild to moderate to severe. It’s also a progressive disorder, which means that it gets worse with time.

Approximately twelve to twenty million people in the United States suffer from sleep apnea. Adult sleep apnea is as common across the globe as is adult onset diabetes. More men suffer from it than women. In addition, it’s more common in those who are overweight and have a tendency toward loud, habitual snoring. According to The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, approximately 38,000 individuals die annually as a result of cardiovascular problems relating in one way or another to sleep apnea.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder differentiated by pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses can cover anywhere from ten to sixty seconds at a time. In more serious cases, the breathing lapses can be even longer. These pauses or “apnea events” can occur as often as three hundred to four hundred times per night. Some people wake up during these episodes while others do not.

What Are The Different Types of Sleep Apnea?

There are three types of sleep apnea – obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common, afflicting nine out of ten individuals who suffer from the disorder. In the case of obstructive sleep apena, an obstruction is blocking the trachea (or wind pipe) from allowing air in and out of the lungs. Other causes of the obstruction include the possibility of too much fatty tissue in the area of the throat or that the throat muscles are too relaxed. The second type, central sleep apnea, results from the brain having crossed signals about normal breathing patterns. In this case “the muscles you use to breathe dont get the go-ahead signal from the brain. Either the brain doesnt send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.” This form is extremely rare. The third and final type, mixed sleep apnea, is a combination of the other two, though it generally has more in common with obstructive sleep apnea.

How Do I Know For Sure If I Have Sleep Apnea?

There are a number of initial symptoms that should alert you to the possibility of sleep apnea. These include loud snoring, cessation of breathing during the night, and extreme tiredness during the day. If you exhibit any of these symptoms, your doctor can send you for a special sleep-recording test known as a polysomnography which can diagnosis the disorder.

Is Sleep Apnea Dangerous And/Or Life Threatening?

If left untreated sleep apnea can lead to more serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. The chances of having a car accident or a work-related accident are also increased for those suffering from sleep apnea.

Is There Anything That Can Be Done To Improve My Sleep Apnea?

Initially, making lifestyle changes can go a long way in preventing sleep apnea from growing worse. These changes can include losing weight, quitting smoking, limiting your use of alcohol four hours before bedtime, not using sleeping pills or sedatives, and sleeping on your side instead of on your back.

Soft palette revision is a type of surgical treatment that is sometimes used to reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is very personal. Each person has several of their own factors that lead up to OSA. The reasons vary greatly, but there seems to be a cure for almost every cause.

People suffering from sleep apnea have many treatment options available which include invasive and non-invasive options. The challenge is finding the right treatment. Each one needs to address factors contributing to a person’s individual disorder.

Soft palate surgeries are becoming very popular and can help tremendously. After healing from soft palate revisions targeting sleep apnea, external appliance use such as CPAP or mouth guards may be unnecessary for many people.

The soft palette contributes to OSA in numerous people. When a person breathes, the uvula and soft palate gently vibrate. In OSA, they do so to a much higher degree causing loud snoring.

Sometimes the reason for the snoring is because the soft palate is too big due to anatomy. Other times tissue becomes big from excessive vibrating which causes “trauma” and swelling.

When the soft palate is over sized, it can partially or completely block the airway. This results in OSA. The treatment options for this particular cause of OSA are often surgical in nature, the most popular being surgeries to reduce the size of the soft palette. Soft palate revisions for sleep apnea seem to have good outcomes when they are performed on patients that actually need it.

LAUP – Laser assisted Uvulopalatoplasty, removes extra tissue from the uvula and soft palate with a laser over the course of several appointments until snoring has been decreased or no more tissue can be removed. This can be done in most offices under a local anesthesia.

Somnoplasty has basically the same outcome, removal of extra tissue, as LAUP, but radio frequency reduction methods are used instead of lasers. The tissue is burned away, by high radio frequencies, then the body absorbs to dead tissue over time. This procedure can be done several times until the desired outcome has been achieved or no more tissue can be safely removed. Patients report this method is less painful than LAUP.

Other soft palate revisions used for sleep apnea are the palate stiffening procedures. Some of these surgeries involve creating scar tissue that will function as rigid splints. Another stiffening surgery uses implants to create firmness of the soft palate which should keep it from collapsing during sleep. The implants are synthetic fibers that are placed midline to, and parallel to the midline of, the soft palate.

Three implant are inserted with a hollow needle under a local anesthesia. They can be removed with relative ease if necessary.

Soft palate revisions used for treatment of sleep apnea are minor surgeries and are mostly effective. In cases where they haven’t been successful in alleviating sleep apnea symptoms, it has been either because there have been other causes along with the oversized soft palate or the soft palate hasn’t been the reason for the obstruction.

The importance of a good investigative doctor well experienced in sleep apnea cannot be stressed enough when considering body altering surgeries involving the mouth and airway.

Sleep apnea is keeping many people from getting the rest they need, for a good nights sleep and to function fully the next day. Sleep apnea is a problem that thousands are being treated for with thousands of others not realizing they are living with. Obstructive sleep apnea is a problem that for most can be corrected. There are no age limits to who can be affected with sleep apnea, or obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is going to be noticed when a person can’t breath while sleeping, the person make gasping noises, or the chest will sink in while they are not breathing at night. Children are observed sleeping, and one will notice this condition almost right away. For the adult, a spouse will notice the condition, the snoring, and the gasping for breath, as it will keep another person awake at night.

Those who are suffering with sleep apnea, with obstructive sleep apnea are known to have an enlarged heart. The enlarged heart is not able to pump the oxygen needed through out the body, and to the brain. When suffering from sleep apnea, unable to breath while sleeping, the stress the heart is under is tremendous and can lead to ongoing problems, and when left untreated, can eventually lead to death, a heart attack, or additional heart disease.

The enlarged heart problem can be dealt with. There are items, things, that can be used to allow the person to sleep without problem. Sleeping while sitting up, or sleeping with a device that is going to open the airways is going to help. There are many dental devices, which will open the jaw, allowing the person to breath without problem, and lessen the stress on the heart.

Obstructed sleep apnea is a problem that will also cause cardiovascular disease over time. As the person who is sleeping is unable to breath, they are gasping for breath, their lungs are not working to full capacity. The continued fatigue during the daytime hours, will only add stress on the body, and can bring about sudden death. Sleep apnea can also cause a stroke, or high blood pressure. Not all sleep apnea is going to require surgery to correct, but without some type of treatment the sleep apnea is going to cause stress on the heart, and other organs of the body so it is in your best interest to discuss the matter with your family doctor.

Sleep apnea is recognized as a common condition among overweight children. If your child has sleep apnea, he stops breathing for a period of 10 to 20 seconds during sleep. The interruption of breathing may extend up to 2 minutes. This episode may occur hundreds of times in a single night.

Sleep apnea can be caused by complete obstruction of airway or partial obstruction. Therefore obstructive sleep apnea is defined as obstruction of airway during sleep. Due to the obstruction of airway, your child’s sleep gets interrupted. As the sleep is interrupted, your child may feel drowsy during the daytime. This also results in tiredness, headaches, loss of memory, lack of energy and depression.

If your child is a normal weight child, he may have tonsils and adenoids which can be cured with surgery. If you child is overweight, the excess fat may narrow the airway. Excess body fat on the neck and chest constricts the air-passageways and sometimes the lungs.

Obesity, mainly abdominal and upper body obesity, is the most significant risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea. Thus morbid or malignant obesity carries a greater risk.

If your child lies down, the throat muscles relax, the tongue falls back and the airway gets obstructed. Due to the obstructed airway, the oxygen cannot be pumped to various parts of the body. Therefore oxygen levels drop, and your child arouses from sleep to breathe and the cycle begins again. Your child might experience snoring which is the result of sleep apnea.

Snoring results from the vibration of excess tissue – whether it’s fat, large natural anatomy or both – as the child breathes in.

Here are the signs and symptoms so that you can identify that your child is suffering from sleep apnea.

1. Interruption of breathing during sleep. Your child may gasp for breathing when breathing is interrupted.

2. Loud snoring or noisy breathing during sleep. As a parent of your child, you can find if they snore; your child may make all types of strange noises when he is sleeping. But snoring is less common in children.

3. Your child may be having a restless sleep. If your child is having sleep apnea, he is not going to get a good night sleep, as may not be able to breath properly while sleeping.

4. Breathing through the mouth, rather than through the nose.

5. Excessive tiredness or daytime sleepiness during the day.

6. With the inability to breath properly, your child may have difficulty in paying attention and difficulty in concentrating.

7. Your child may be having tonsils and adenoids.

Your child may sleep with his mouth open. You can see his chest retract as he gasps for air, and he sometimes sleep in strange positions. Your child may show signs of depression or outward signs of confusion because he may be generally tired, from lack of sleep. Your child may also show signs of behavior changes as he is not getting the sleep needed.

Due to the presence of some, or indeed many, of these signs does not necessarily mean that your child is suffering from sleep apnea, but it would be better to consult a specialist if he is facing with any of these symptoms.

Today, sleep apnea is being widely recognized as a common disorder amongst children of all ages, and particularly amongst children between the ages of about three and six. Estimates vary, but in the United States alone, the number of children suffering from sleep apnea is put at between one and a half and two million.

There really aren’t any definite sleep apnea cures, but there are several different treatments for the dangerous sleeping disorder. For example, some people have to undergo surgery for it, but there are several problems that can occur with surgery, even though the surgery itself may be a relatively easy procedure for the surgeon. The swelling that occurs following surgery is especially dangerous for sleep apnea patients, as it can totally block off the airway and cause suffocation. Moreover, some of the drugs used for anesthesia can exasperate the problem while the surgery is underway. Scarier still, the drugs that many doctors prescribe to relieve post surgery pain and discomfort can depress the nervous system, making the apnea worse for a short period of time.

Some people never have to go under the knife. Some patients can find that sleep apnea cures are as easy as purchasing a special pillow that positions their head, back and neck in a way that opens the airway and puts an end to the apneas. Other people have to sleep attached to a CPAP machine, which delivers pressurized air through a mask. In cases where sleep apnea is caused by infectious mononucleosis, a regimen of anti-inflammatory drugs works just fine (although it’s important to note that in these cases, the drugs are a temporary solution to a temporary problem).

Currently, there are lots of clinical trials that are searching for more sleep apnea cures. In particular, doctors are exploring the option of neurostimulation to relieve the problem. In these cases, a pacemaker like device is implanted, sending gentle shock waves to the brain that stimulates the muscles in the throat, ending the apneas. Still, some people are exploring more natural solutions, such as breathing techniques that are taught in yoga. Many people find these breathing exercises strengthen the muscles in the throat, effectively curing the problem.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that may be underestimated at first, but then takes its toll until the inevitable occurs, which is death. There have been numerous cases of nocturnal deaths related to sleep apnea, which causes alarm to sufferers. Treatment for sleep apnea is available, but is there a solution if the condition is related to acid reflux? Are acid reflux and sleep apnea related?

It may not seem likely until you remember that the trachea and the esophagus are right next to each other, separated by function only through the epiglottis. As someone is under the effects of sleep apnea, the difficulty in breathing may coax gastric juices to come up from the stomach to the esophagus, which causes acid reflux and the condition known as “heart burn”. The reverse can also occur as the gastric contents can come up to your throat and block the passage of air towards your trachea. Therefore, the answer to the question of “Are acid reflux and sleep apnea related?” is clear.

Amongst sleep apnea sufferers, those suffering from acid reflux have reported worse cases of breathing difficulty during sleep than those with sleep apnea alone. If you have both acid reflux and sleep apnea, you must take the necessary measures to counter these ailments so that they will not become a nuisance to your health in the future.

Consult a Physician

This is the most important step. Considering the fact that these two are health conditions that merit immediate treatment, your physician is the best person to give prescriptions and recommendations as to how you can cure yourself. Follow his/her advice and learn what you can about your condition. Ask questions and find out the best solution possible to your problem.

Watch Your Diet

It is important that fatty, greasy, and sugary foods are avoided as much as possible to minimize instances of acid reflux. These kinds of foods have been reported to increase the chance of regurgitation, which cause acid reflux. Avoiding these foods will help in your chances for recovery.

Look Out For Extreme Symptoms

This is very important as it can actually save your life. This is even better if you sleep near another person, as he/she can tell you if something different happens to you during your sleep. List these symptoms down so that your physician can identify an illness related to them. Without this crucial step, unforeseen consequences may occur.

Relaxation And Stress Relief

Keep your body relaxed before going to sleep with techniques like meditation and breathing exercises. Any sort of tension may affect the muscles that affect your breathing and peristalsis, as well as those around your wind pipe and at the back of your mouth.

Sleeping Position

Your body position during sleep is crucial. Sleeping straight with your head and neck slightly elevated can help minimize obstructions in your air passages, as well as prevent regurgitated gastric content from coming up to your throat.

These are only preliminary measures to formal treatment, so make sure that you consult your doctor once you exhibit signs of these ailments. Are acid reflux and sleep apnea related? They definitely are.
